Shiva Shell, also known as Pacific Cat’s Eye, is considered a type of fossil. It is formed from the operculum, or protective door, of the Turban snail. Over time, after the snail dies, this part of the shell detaches and fossilizes, creating the distinctive Shiva Shell. It is found in the shallow tropical waters of the South Indo-Pacific Seas. Named after the Hindu God, Shiva, the shell represents the Third Eye found in many depictions of the God. Folklore suggests Shiva Eye Shells are “Mermaids’ Money” and good luck to travelers and fishermen. Eyes in general are a symbol of protection as to ward off the “Evil Eye”.
